The Journey Begins in Ladakh
Abida was born and spent childhood days in Ladakh. This region known for its tough terrain, low oxygen levels, and freezing temperatures. Life there teaches resilience. Children walk miles to reach school. Winters are harsh and resources are limited. But these challenges only made Abida more stronger and always looking for better opportunities. She learned early on that if you want something, you have to work for it ‘step by step, breath by breath’. Abida was fascinated by the mountains around her since her childhood. While others saw them as obstacles, she saw them as teachers. Climbing these mountains became her dream. She believed, “If I live among the highest peaks, why can’t I climb the highest of all ?”
Choosing a Path Less Taken
Unlike most girls in her village, Abida wanted something different. She joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where she learned discipline, teamwork and leadership. The training was tough. But, her physical stamina, mental strength and determination stood out. She soon became a Junior Under Officer, leading from the front.
Through NCC, she got a chance to attend adventure camps, trekking expeditions and even training for high-altitude climbing. This is where her dream of Mount Everest began to feel possible.
Climbing Everest – Step by Step
In 2024, Abida joined an all-India NCC Mount Everest Expedition. She spent months of continuous intense physical training, endurance building and mental preparation followed. The team had to face avalanches, extreme cold, thin air and unpredictable weather condition.
But Abida kept going. Every step up the mountain reminded her of the people back home, the girls in her village and her own promise to herself. Always reminded that nothing is impossible.
And then, after weeks of climbing, on a cold morning, Abida Afreen stood on top of the world—the summit of Mount Everest. She held the Indian flag high, her eyes filled with tears and her heart full of pride.
