- To enhance operational capability with a more agile and tech-savvy force.
- To offer career opportunities to India’s youth while instilling values of discipline, patriotism, and physical fitness.
Benefits for Youth, Country, and the Armed Forces ub

For the Indian Armed Forces, the scheme offers operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and a modern approach to manpower management. For the nation, this scheme builds a pool of trained, disciplined citizens, potentially contributing to society in multiple roles post-service.
Role of Agniveers in Operation Sindoor
A defining moment for the first Agniveer batch was their participation in Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to cross-border drone and missile attacks. Approximately 3,000 Agniveers were deployed in frontline air defence operations.
These young soldiers operated advanced systems such as :
- Pechora, Schilka, OSA-AK, Strela, and Tunguska anti-aircraft weapons
- Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missile systems
- Akashteer Air Defence Network
Many served in critical roles like gunners, communication specialists, fire control operators, and drivers of missile-mounted vehicles. They proved their capability and commitment in real-time combat scenarios.
Evaluation Process : Transparency and Merit
Agniveers are evaluated through a four-stage assessment at :
- 31 weeks
- 18 months
- 30 months
- 42 months

The current third stage is crucial. It tests the soldiers on :
- Drills
- Physical fitness
- Weapons handling
- Field performance
- Professional conduct
Notably, the unit where the Agniveer is posted does not conduct the assessment, ensuring complete impartiality. Also, mark sheets are accessible to candidates, reinforcing transparency.
Those in remote or high-altitude regions (like Ladakh or Siachen) are evaluated in nearby Corps Battle Schools or rear units to ensure fairness and logistical feasibility.
