The Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch is the legal arm of the Indian Army, providing legal assistance and advisory services to the Army all services. JAG officers serve as Army lawyers, handling legal matters, advising commanders, and prosecuting cases. The JAG officers are responsible for providing legal advice on a wide range of issues, including military law, civil law, and international law. They play a crucial role in maintaining discipline and ensuring that the Army operates within the framework of the law. From handling court-martial proceedings to advising on human rights issues, JAG officers are the guardians of justice within the Indian Army.

Eligibility Criteria’s to apply
Education Qualification : Required Law (LAW) Graduate degree with 55% Aggregate Marks. They must have registered at Indian Bar Council or state Bar council. In addition, CLAT PG Score of Preceding year is mandatory for all candidates (including LLM qualified and LLM appearing candidates)
Age : 21-27 years at the time of process of application
Nationality : Indian
Education : LLB/LLM degree from a recognized university
Selection Procedure
First step – The first step in the selection process is the shortlisting of applicants based on the required eligibility criteria’s. Candidates who meet the requirements are called for further testing i.e five day SSB.
Second Step – SSB Interview conducted for five days. This is five days testing procedure who examine the suitability of the candidate to become officer in Indian Armed Forces.
Third step – Candidates who qualifies the SSB. They undergo for Medical Examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards required for service in the Indian Army.
Fourth step – The candidates who clear these all previous tests. Their finally merit list is being prepared based on their performances.
Fifth step – After the preparation of merit list JAG selection board finalise the selection.
Training schedule
The training period of 49 weeks held at Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai in the month of Apr and October.
After completion of their pre-commission training, JAG officers undergo training in military law and order. This training comprises with the knowledge and skills required to handle legal issues within and outside the Army at Army Law School, Kolkata

Pay and allowances – Starting Salary (Lieutenant Rank):
Basic Pay: ₹56,100 per month (Level 10 of the Pay Matrix).
Military Service Pay (MSP): ₹15,500 per month
Grade Pay: ₹5,400 per month.
Total Starting Salary (Approx.): ₹77,000–₹80,000 per month (including basic pay, MSP, and grade pay).
