What is TES and Why is it Special ?

TES (Technical Entry Scheme) is a special route to join the Indian Army as an officer, directly after 10+2, without going through the NDA or CDS path. If you are passionate about technology, curious about engineering, and have the heart of a soldier-TES allows you to combine your love for science and your desire to serve the nation.

Through this scheme, you’ll be trained not just as a soldier, but also as an engineer. After 4 years of training, you will graduate with a B.E./B.Tech degree, and be commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army. Sounds incredible ? That’s because it is.

Who Can Apply ? (Eligibility Criteria)

Before you apply, make sure you meet the following eligibility criteria’s

  • Gender & Marital Status : Only unmarried male candidates can apply.
  • Age : You must be between 16½ to 19½ years.
  • Education : You should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (PCM).
  • JEE (Main) : You must have appeared in JEE Mains of the current year.

How to Apply for TES-54

  2. Click on “Officers Entry Apply/Login”.
  3. Register yourself and fill the TES-54 online application form.
  4. Upload your documents : mark sheets, JEE scorecard, etc.
  5. Check everything carefully and submit the form.

What Happens After You Apply ? (Selection Process)

The Indian Army operates with very fair and detailed selection process. Here’s what will happen after you apply :

1. Shortlisting

Candidates will be shortlisted based on their JEE Main rank and PCM percentage.

2. SSB Interview (Service Selection Board)

If shortlisted, you’ll be called for the SSB Interview. A 5-day testing process that evaluates your personality, leadership, and potential to become an officer.

SSB isn’t about book knowledge. It’s about your character, courage, and clarity of thought. It includes the following tests :

  • Psychology Tests
  • Group Tasks
  • Personal Interview
  • Obstacle Course
  • Conference round

3. Medical Examination

Those who clear the SSB are sent for a detailed medical fitness test. You must be physically and mentally fit to join the Army.

4. Final Merit List

A final list of selected candidates is published. If your name is there, your life is about to change forever.

Your Training: Becoming a Gentleman Cadet

Where Will You Train ? (Training Period)

Selected candidates will begin their journey at :

  • Cadet Training Wings (CTWs) in CME Pune, MCEME Secunderabad, or MCTE Mhow
  • Final year military training at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun

What Will You Learn ?

  • Engineering degree over 3 years (through Army institutes)
  • Final year purely military-focused at IMA

You will learn everything-from engineering concepts to battle tactics, from leadership to discipline. By the end of 4 years, you’ll be ready not just as an engineer, but as a leader of men.

What Rank Will You Get After Training ?

After completing 4 years of training, you’ll be commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.

This is your first step in the officer’s ladder. Promotions are completely based on experience, exams, and merit : Lieutenant → Captain → Major → Lt Colonel → Colonel → Brigadier → Major General → Lieutenant General → General (Army Chief)

Where Will You Be Posted ?

As an officer, you will be posted anywhere in India, from the snow covered borders of Leh to deserts of Rajasthan, and even abroad in UN Peacekeeping missions.

You may serve in :

  • Combat Units (Infantry, Artillery, Armoured)
  • Engineering or Signal Regiments
  • High-altitude posts, border areas, or even metro cities

How Much Will You Earn ? (Salary & Perks)

The Indian Army ensures its officers are not just respected, but also well compensated.

Basic Salary of a Lieutenant : Rs 56,100 + Rs 15,500 (MSP)

Total starting salary : Rs 71,600/month (approx) + allowances

Other Allowances Include :

  • Field Area Allowance : Rs 25,000 – Rs 42,500
  • High Altitude : Rs 3,400 – Rs 25,000
  • Uniform, Travel, and House Rent Allowance (HRA)
  • Free rations, mess, Children Education Allowance and canteen facilities.
