But the true warriors are those who get up again, rebuild themselves, and move forward with greater determination. A winning example of this is Lance Naik Shubam Juyal, a glorious soldier of the Indian Army and a para-athlete. From a terrible tragedy of life to victory, his journey inspires not only the youths but every Indians who dare to dream beyond obstacles of life.

The Turning Point of His Life

Born in Rurki, Uttarakhand, Shubam Juyal had always dreamed of wearing uniforms and serving the nation since childhood. Because his father was serving in the army. When his father retired as Naib Subedar, he wished that his son should carry forward the legacy of his father with more respect and pride.

Shubam’s life was full of hope, and enthusiasm in 2022. He was preparing for SSB i.e interview by passing the written examination of ACC to become an officer under the service entry scheme in the Army. But he fell victim to a tragic bike accident, when he was going for interview for the dreams of becoming an officer. Just one day before that. At the young age of 26, his world became empty. The accident completely crushed not only his body but also the dreams of life. One of his leg had to be cut due to a serious accident. Lying on the bed of the hospital with one of his leg, he realized that how uncertain the person’s life is – and it brought the biggest change in his life. From that day, he stopped postponing things for “tomorrow” and decided to live and work in “present”.

Choosing Courage Over Sorrow

Life was not easy after the accident. Shubam was sent to the Artificial Limb Center in Pune, where he was given two options. First was diploma course for employment or para-Sports, Which was not easy. Most people adopt an easy route. But Shubam chose the path of difficult path.

He decided to take para-sports, which was inspired by passion to prove himself. This was the beginning of his second innings – while weakness did not become his disappointment but courage and perseverance became his strength.

The Journey into Army Paralympic Node

In 2013, Shubam entered the army paralympic node, where he discovered huge opportunities for para-athletes. Those who met the role models who won the medals at the Asian Games also set the records, they re-awakened his hope.

He was inspired by two -time Olympians, and subedar border Antils like Subedar Suman Rana, who had already brought medals for India. Training with such veterans gave him confidence that he could also bring medals for the country.

The army provided him world-level facilities- sports grants, funded coaching, yoga and mental conditioning. The Indian Army made him a competitive athlete to participate in the world’s Paralympic Games, providing him to all these resources.

Shot Put – His Chosen Battleground

In many sports events, Shubam chose shot put (F57 category), which is a dynamic phenomenon for para-athletes. Here, athletes sit on a safe chair, their movement is banned by belt, and sheer rely on the strength of the upper body to bounce a heavy shot.

This was not an easy option for him at all. Competition against the best players of Asia, tireless efforts to Shubam, practicing day and night, refining own techniques and practicing continuously. But he was determine for his success. Step by step, he climbed the ladder of success, competing with India’s best para-athlete players.

Achievements So Far

From being an army soldier to recover from accidents to become para-athlete, the entire journey of Shubam’s life is an achievement. Today, he is proudly representing the Indian Army in para-athletics.

• To break the world record in shot put (67 m) – a target he is just half a meter away.
